I Quit Social Media for 30 days, Brick Made it Real

I have tried every “screen time” trick you can imagine to quit social media. App limits. Focus modes. Grayscale. Turning notifications off. Even deleting apps. And every time, the same thing happened. My brain found the loophole. Not because I am weak, but because the phone is designed to win. It is a casino that fits in your pocket. Brick is the first tool I have used that changes the game by adding one missing ingredient: real world friction.

What Brick is, in plain English

Brick is a small physical device plus an app. You choose which apps or websites you want blocked, then you tap your phone to the Brick to turn that mode on. When you want those apps back, you physically tap the Brick again to unbrick.

Why it helped me actually quit social media for 30 days

My goal was clean and clear: 30 days, no social media.

Not “less.” Not “only at night.” Not “I will be mindful.” Those are cute stories we tell ourselves while our thumb is already opening the app.

What Brick did for me was remove the constant negotiation. The decision became binary.

  2. Live my life

That physical separation is the magic. With typical blockers, the key to distraction is still inside the phone. With Brick, the key is in the room you left it in.

So when the impulse hits, you have to stand up, walk over, and consciously choose to reconnect. That tiny gap is where your power returns.

And here is what surprised me: once I bricked my phone, my mind got quieter within a day or two. Not perfect. Just quieter. My attention stopped feeling like it was being pulled apart by invisible hands.

Setup and daily use

Setup took minutes. Download the app, create a mode, select the apps to block, then tap the phone to the Brick.

From there, I used it like a ritual.

Morning: Brick on.
Deep work: Brick on.
Date night: Brick on.
Gym: Brick on.

And Brick does not make your phone useless. You can keep essentials like maps, messages, camera, and whatever you truly need.

It also tracks how long you stay bricked with a timer, which is a nice little mirror without being shamey.

The psychology that makes it work

This is the part most people miss.

Willpower is not a strategy. It is a battery. And your battery is already being drained by work, parenting, relationships, and life.

Brick works because it shifts the burden off willpower and onto environment design.

You are not trying to “win” against a billion dollar attention economy inside the same device that delivers the temptation.

You are making a decision once, then letting the physical world enforce it.

That is neural system friendly. Less internal wrestling. More peace.

Emergency access and loopholes

Brick includes emergency unbricks, and it has a Strict Mode designed to reduce loopholes like deleting the app or changing settings to get around it.

That matters, because if you are anything like me, the slippery part is not the first week. It is day 11 when you feel “fine” and start bargaining.
