Self-Healing Expert: How to Heal Your Body with Your Mind (Brandy Gillmore Proved It)
What if your body is holding on to pain because your mind thinks it’s keeping you safe?
Josh Trent welcomes Brandy Gillmore, mind-body healing expert and author of Master Your Mind and Energy to Heal Your Body, to the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 838, to explore how she went from a wheelchair to walking again after years of chronic pain, why the mind can link pain to safety and love, and why healing is a skill you can learn, not just a destination.
The GIFT Method

[05:10] The Mind-Body Connection Is Not Mysterious
How the mindbody connection is happening all around us every day, showing up as a face that turns red from embarrassment, a heart that races from nerves, and shoulders that knot up from stress.
Why the placebo and nocebo effects reveal that what the mind believes sends real physiological signals to the body, whether or not the substance causing the reaction is real.
How the body emits biophotons, particles of light from a biological organism, and how thoughts and emotions can actually influence those particles.
Why fiber optic telecommunications networks, which Brandy built her first career around, are made entirely from particles of light, and why the body works the same way.
[08:45] The Network of the Body
How Brandy grew up believing emotions were for weak people, and suppressed her feelings so well she did not think they could even affect her injury.
What troubleshooting a telecom network for large companies and troubleshooting her own body turned out to have in common is that both come down to understanding the flow of energy and light.
Why emotions that seem to last longer than 90 seconds are not lingering emotions but repeating ones, and why that distinction changes everything about how to approach them.
How repetition compulsion, reenactment, and attachment theory are all names for the same phenomenon, which is patterns of feeling and perception that run on an automatic loop.
Why one person’s pattern of feeling like a victim and another person’s pattern of feeling confident will both replay constantly regardless of circumstances.
[13:10] The Mind Gets Miswired
What the most common reason is for the mind to hold onto something painful is that it has been linked up at a subconscious level to safety, protection, or survival.
How the mind gets into an error loop around trauma when it wants to release fear but believes the fear is what is keeping it safe.
How a young child who falls and gets soothed by a loving adult can link the injury to receiving love and then spend the rest of their life unconsciously seeking an owie to get that love.
Why decades later, when someone feels unloved or disconnected, the subconscious mind can reach back to that early programming and produce physical symptoms not as punishment but as an attempt to generate connection.
How Josh’s experience watching his mother be carried out on a stretcher as a child and the unconscious decision to control his environments ever after is the mind doing exactly what it is wired to do.
[17:45] Why Moving Forward Is the First Step
How the research on multiple personality disorder that Brandy found while in extreme pain showed people shifting out of illness and even reversing incurable diseases between personalities without years of meditation or therapy.
What excited her most about that research was that the changes could happen fast and the disorders were supposedly incurable.
Why trying to excavate childhood material while in a state of extreme physical pain and panic is often counterproductive, because the mind needs first to have some clarity before it can see clearly.
How clearing emotional patterns in the present moment is what creates the mental clarity to do deeper work.
Why recognizing that something happened in the past is intelligent, while excavating why it happened is usually a fool’s errand.
[20:50] Change Your Emotional Patterns
How trying to reason with someone in an acute emotional state almost always fails, because the emotional brain and the reasoning brain are running in opposite directions.
Why the more we shift emotional patterns in the present, the more mental clarity appears, and the more we can access the deeper layers of what needs to change.
Why it is not just the presence of an emotion that creates disease but the specific combination of emotions, the recipe, the precise mix of ingredients.
How someone with severe PTSD can have no physical illness while another person with the same trauma has a completely different illness and yet another personality with the same origin has no illness at all.
How self-image, such as identifying as someone who is disabled or who mirrors a sick parent, can block healing independently of any emotional pattern.
How many people in the personal development and healing space are operating from their wounding rather than their wisdom and why that produces widespread misconceptions.
Why the open label placebo, where both doctor and patient know it is fake and it still works, proves that belief alone is not the mechanism people think it is.
How the instruction to raise your frequency is one of the most common misconceptions in wellness, since a high brain frequency is called trauma and a high heart frequency is panic.
[28:50] Healing Is a Skill Nobody Teaches You
Why healing is a skill, not just a destination, and why it requires actually changing one’s consciousness rather than consuming information about it.
How consuming information feels satisfying because learning and regurgitating feels like progress, while genuinely shifting one’s emotional state and identity is far more uncomfortable.
What the real distinction is between knowing something, being something, and doing something, and why most people are stuck in knowing.
How Brandy was on the phone with a colleague when the towers were hit on September 11, heard that person screaming for help, then the line went dead.
Why working in a building surrounded by televisions showing the footage on repeat created a loop of survivor’s guilt she did not recognize as such for years.
How the programming had actually started much earlier through growing up Lutheran seeing Jesus die for others, admiring Martin Luther King, and as a young child feeling shame for saying she would not die to save her brother.
[35:55] The Three Events That Compounded
Why positive state heals you faster.
How the accident followed the September 11 guilt, and why someone already running a subconscious program of not being allowed to celebrate life heals very differently from someone who is not.
Why CRPS, which Brandy was diagnosed with, appears in some people after injury and not others, and why the emotional programming underneath is often the variable no one considers.
If you had asked Brandy at the time whether she had survivor’s guilt, she would have said no, and why that is exactly the problem.
Why the three layers of incidents stacked on each other so that her body never got the signal that it was safe and allowed to heal.
[39:30] Exiting the Medical Model
How Brandy tried gratitude as a healing practice while unknowingly reinforcing her deeper guilt patterns, because gratitude layered on top of guilt can actually intensify it.
How she was accepted into a hospital clinical trial and then was turned away because they did not expect her to get better.
How she fought her way into receiving the treatment, it did not work, and she found herself not wanting to continue living.
What pulled her out of that moment was a thought about the placebo effect and the fact that a certain percentage of people get results, which meant there was still something to discover.
How digging deeper into the medical journals after that moment eventually led her to multiple personality disorder research and the specific question of how spontaneous remission actually works.
[46:25] The Recipe of Specific Emotions
Why the specific combination of emotions, not any single one, is what creates physical illness or allows physical healing.
How stress affecting the physical body is medically proven all the way to the point of death, from widowhood effect to infants in orphanages who receive nutrition but not love and die.
Why multiple personality disorder makes this visible, showing one personality with severe trauma and no illness, another with an autoimmune condition, and a third with a completely different diagnosis all from the same original trauma.
How the same change can be seen visually on medical thermal imaging equipment, where emotional shifts in real time show the body changing from red to green as pain dissolves.
How in a 28-minute session, a participant who had just come from a 10-day meditation retreat and a five-day positive thinking workshop went from a pain level of six to zero by identifying the specific emotional combination and shifting it.
[50:35] How to Identify Your Specific Ingredients
How the five factors function like a checklist of categories, and the first is positive expectation and optimism, because research shows that even after surgery optimism accelerates wound healing and cell proliferation.
Why factor two includes guilt patterns that most people carry without any awareness, which Brandy calls negative punishment programming.
How survivor’s guilt, guilt for having a good day, guilt for making money while others struggle, and guilt for enjoying life are all guilt, even though they do not feel like guilt from the inside.
Why starting a healing practice with gratitude can actually backfire when deeper guilt is running, because the gratitude layer intensifies the guilt underneath rather than replacing it.
How conflicting emotions are extremely common and why someone feeling both love and anger, or both hope and guilt, is not broken but simply human.
[56:40] Emotion Controlled Consciousness
Why affirmations alone almost never work, because the emotional lens is filtering out every positive statement before it can land.
How Steve Jobs meditated since his teens, ate vegan and fruitarian, supplemented aggressively, and still developed a fatal illness, pointing to the emotional and relational dimensions that meditation alone cannot address.
Why perspective is a far more powerful variable in healing than most wellness models acknowledge, and why the same set of circumstances can lock one person into victimhood and give another the motivation to transform.
Why when Brandy says she started looking at ways to get her mind to work for her rather than against her, that is the moment the real work began.
How the mind automatically filters perception based on the dominant emotion present, where someone deeply in love sees only the good in another person and someone genuinely furious cannot see any good at all.
[01:01:40] Making the Unconscious Conscious
How Carl Jung said that until you make the unconscious conscious it will rule your life and you will call it fate, and why Brandy’s response to that is to move forward first rather than excavate backward.
Why positive expectation and optimism must come before any deeper work, because a mind dominated by fear of what comes next blocks access to everything underneath.
How someone with a deep expectation of dying or failing will unconsciously cancel out any healing intention before it can take root.
Why identifying the specific ingredients that are blocking the forward path is always more useful than excavating why the wound was created in the first place.
How the recipe is different for every person, and why the push to always start with childhood material leaves out everyone for whom a different ingredient is the bigger block.
[01:08:40] Change Is the Gift, Not the Injury
How Josh sent his father a vintage radio with a handwritten note that said the radio is the receiver but the heart is the dial, released all expectation about how it would be received, and his father responded with yeah, good stuff.
Why Brandy felt immediately that the father likely carries enormous guilt that makes it nearly impossible to play or be playful in response to something tender.
Why Brandy is clear that her injury was not a gift, most people with what she had do not get better, and CRPS was at one point called the suicide disease because of how many people in that level of pain want to end their lives.
How the fact that she changed was the gift, and why that distinction matters enormously for how people relate to their suffering.
Why telling someone that cancer was the greatest blessing of their life can backfire at a subconscious level by linking the illness to the gift and giving the mind a reason to attract another one.
How after healing herself Brandy discovered an ability to channel information and feel into another person’s emotional body, which she kept private for years because she could not yet explain it.
How mirror touch synesthesia, which is medically documented as the ability for one person to feel what another person is physically experiencing, was the first scientific frame she found that partially described what she was accessing.
[01:15:15] Connection to Source + Reading Other People’s Energy
Why holding the clinical world and the channeling world simultaneously was tricky for Brandy at first and is now simply unconscious.
How she describes the ability as universal WiFi, where the mind that has been unlocked can connect to networks it could not previously access.
Why just as a phone on one carrier cannot connect to another carrier’s network without being unlocked first, the mind needs to be freed from certain programming before it can access deeper information.
What came through when Brandy tuned into Josh’s energy was a very strong protector, a sense of needing to fight darkness in the world, and a father energy wanting to shield others.
How the loss of his mother registered at ages 7 and four with particular intensity, and how a feeling of grief and underlying tears was present beneath the protector.
How the anger toward his father, the feeling that he didn’t do enough and he should have done more, showed up clearly and how that same pattern of why didn’t you do more tends to repeat toward other people in Josh’s life.
Why those patterns are not character flaws but repetition compulsion, the mind running the same emotional script it learned at the beginning.

[01:24:30] Compassion vs Forgiveness vs Understanding
Why Brandy’s response to the struggle with forgiveness is that forgiveness is not even a fair ask.
How Josh’s mother did not have the capability to be different any more than a child has the capability to drive, which means compassion rather than forgiveness is the appropriate orientation.
What radical understanding actually means is that when you truly understand someone’s subconscious programming was running them and they did not choose it any more than they chose their own wounding, the personal sting dissolves.
Why forgiveness without a deeper shift in understanding leaves the pattern entirely intact.
How twins with the same imprisoned father can end up in completely opposite places, one in law enforcement and one in prison, based entirely on the meaning they each made from the same experience.
Why the 180 shift means taking the energy locked in hurt or anger and redirecting it forward, so instead of the mind holding onto hurt to prove the other person caused harm it turns to showing what the person became because of and despite everything.
How healing is not linear but follows something closer to a sine wave, and the reason people slide back into old patterns is that the new neural pathway was installed without fully deleting the old one.
Why when the 180 shift lands fully and the new perspective is embodied there is no longer any motivation to hold onto the old wound, which makes the healing self-reinforcing rather than effortful.
[01:36:00] What Really Blocks Us from Creating Reality
How the mind, body, soul, and spirit each have deeper motivators that lock our perspective in place, and one of the most powerful is the sense of deserving.
Why someone who feels they have a right to be angry and also wants to forgive will find themselves unable to fully do either, because the contradicting programs cancel out any forward movement.
How self-sympathy creates more patterns of feeling sorry for self, while self-compassion is understanding the self and giving the self a replacement way of being that feels genuinely better to move into.
Why you cannot ask someone to release the rug they are standing on until you give them a new place to stand, and why that replacement is what makes the change sustainable.
[01:42:10] Understanding Comes Before Compassion
Why real compassion is downstream of understanding rather than the other way around, because when you truly understand a situation you naturally stop taking it personally.
How a 40-year-old throwing a tantrum and a 2-year-old throwing a tantrum can both land differently depending entirely on the meaning the observer assigns.
What positive emotional patterning actually involves is not just thinking positive thoughts but walking the same path through the field of grass repeatedly until it becomes a neural highway rather than a faint trail.
Why blocks to installing a new neural pathway are as real as the pathway itself, such as when confidence gets blocked by the belief that confidence will make people judge you.
How real transformation differs from affirmation in that the feeling becomes automatic, the old pattern stops reasserting, and the positive state is the new default rather than a conscious effort.
[01:48:25] Success Stories and the Glow of Healing
How women who had been bedridden for years are now running marathons, and someone whose cancer had metastasized through bones, liver, and breast showed zero detectable cancer on imaging after doing this work.
What people describe when they stop carrying the weight of their old programming is not peace in the quiet sense but a giddy, glowing, buzzing happiness that is present while doing absolutely nothing.
Why the feeling Brandy describes after healing is so different from how she previously defined happiness, which used to require external triggers, that she compares it to putting herself to bed like a child who does not want to stop playing.
[01:53:00] Understanding Means Standing Among an Idea
How the etymology of the word understand is not beneath but among, meaning to stand inside an idea, which is why real understanding produces a felt shift rather than just a mental one.
Why radical change can happen fast when the motivation to change is compelling enough, because the mind simply needs a reason to sprint toward the new rather than crawl away from the old.
How creating a new neural pathway also requires deleting the old one, and why this is the difference between a smoker who quits and keeps relapsing and one who never goes back.
Why people who are told to go deeper into the negative can keep them stuck in their sickness.
Why it is nearly impossible to release a coping pattern before there is something better to replace it with.
How some people get love and connection through illness.
Why the answer is never to stay stuck in the hurt but to understand why the other person could not respond any differently given their own programming.
How self-compassion is not self-sympathy but giving the self a replacement that feels genuinely better to move into, because you cannot take keys away from a baby, you trade up.
[02:00:50] Inherited vs Adopted: We Are Active Participants
Why Brandy prefers the word adopted over inherited when talking about patterns passed down through families, because inherited implies no choice and adopted acknowledges that we were active participants even when we were unconscious ones.
How five siblings growing up in the same household can each become entirely different people, which shows that the programming is not identical even in identical conditions.
How patterns operate like radio stations in that the soul’s essence arrives already tuned to a frequency and then attracts an environment that resonates with that frequency rather than one that simply mirrors it.
Why self-pity is one of the most hidden perpetuating patterns in personal development work.
Why empowerment is always the answer, not because the other person’s actions were acceptable but because empowerment is the only place from which real change is possible.
What the version of Brandy sitting in the wheelchair most needed to hear was to stop feeling powerless and stop looking everywhere outside herself for the answer.
Why the bigger the mission, the bigger the mess is a truth that holds up across everyone who is doing something meaningful in the world.
How even people with genuinely wonderful lives can sabotage deeply in ways that look mysterious from the outside.
Why Brandy will not say an injury was a gift or that cancer was a blessing, because if someone links the problem to the gift the mind will give them another gift.
[02:13:25] Why Some People Heal and Some Don’t
Why the answer is always identifying the specific programming that is off and changing it, rather than any blanket approach.
How spontaneous remission, which is medically documented and has been shown to occur even at the deathbed, represents a last-minute shift in the specific emotional ingredients that unknowingly changed the recipe.
How when there is a genuine shift in the underlying programming rather than a surface reframe, everything becomes possible.
Why so many people are walking around with broken or wounded hearts that a true change of heart feels almost inaccessible.
