Why Trying to Fix Your Emotions Is Keeping You Stuck (Dr. Sarah Hensley)

Why Trying to Fix Your Emotions Is Keeping You Stuck (Dr. Sarah Hensley)
Why is every emotion you have ever suppressed running your nervous system?
Josh Trent welcomes Relationship Coach, Dr. Sarah Hensley, to the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 824, to explore why emotions are not problems to be solved but waves to be completed, how unprocessed feelings are stored in the nervous system become the invisible engine behind every failed relationship pattern, and why healing shame is not just psychological work but a deeply spiritual act.

In This Episode, Dr. Sarah Hensley Uncovers:

[01:05] Emotions Are Not Problems, They Are Waves

  • Why most people treat emotions as problems to be solved instead of messages the body is trying to deliver.
  • How a secure caregiver responds to a child’s emotional wave.
  • Why psychological integration only happens when the emotion completes its full cycle in the body, the way a wave builds, peaks, and finally crashes into the ocean.
  • Why an avoidant strategy of emotional suppression creates a filing cabinet of unprocessed energy that the nervous system must constantly guard against.
  • Why anxious band-aiding strategies like venting, food, and shopping cut the wave off before it completes, locking the cycle in place permanently.

Resources:

[07:10] The Space Between the Head and the Heart

  • Why the largest space in most people’s lives is the gap between the head and the heart, and why modernity has made the crossing nearly impossible.
  • How instant access to food, pornography, dating apps, and social media gives people endless ways to interrupt the emotional wave the moment it begins to rise.
  • Why society has produced two dominant coping styles: the avoidant who isolates and suppresses, and the anxious who seeks immediate external soothing.
  • Why generational patterns compound across generations.

[11:55] Emotional Epigenetics

  • Why the seventh generation principle from Native American wisdom predates and mirrors what science has since confirmed about epigenetic inheritance.
  • How stress in utero can turn on genes associated with a sympathetically dominant nervous system.
  • Why Dr. Sarah went three levels deep to a PhD because of unhealed perfectionism and a deep sense of unworthiness that needed to prove itself through intellect.
  • Why knowledge doesn’t bring healing.
  • How moving through pain appropriately is the only mechanism that actually does.

[17:10] The 90-Second Wave of Emotions

  • How an emotion fully moves through the body in 90 seconds.
  • Why jumping into deep breathwork the moment dysregulation begins can actually cut the wave off rather than complete it.
  • How we can use breath strategically.
  • Why the goal is to wire together the sensation of feeling something big in the body with the signal that it is still safe to stay present.
  • How running, eating, or any other healthy coping strategy used when discomfort rises is still cutting the emotional wave off and producing the same stuck result.

Resources:

[20:30] The SOLACE Framework and the Freeze State

  • How somatic looping for attachment centered embodiment works to soothe us.
  • Why the breath in SOLACE is spaced out enough to provide a safety signal without cutting the emotional wave off.
  • How none of us are broken and why the difference between broken and burdened changes what healing is even looking for.
  • Why the most avoidant people are not in fight or flight but in functional freeze.
  • How functional freeze allows people to stay productive while completely dissociated from their inner world.
  • Why there is no true attunement with others without presence, and why presence is the very thing the freeze state eliminates.

[25:15] Where Healing Starts Without Parental Models

  • The true starting place for healing is becoming aware of your own patterns.
  • Why most people stop their progress because their ego and internalized shame create a wall.
  • How it is your responsibility to change patterns that came from your attachment trauma even if you did not create them.
  • Why behavior is not who we are at our core but who we were conditioned to be, and why anything learned can be unlearned.
  • How radical self-accountability requires admitting when something’s not working.
  • Why the window between learned helplessness and radical self-empowerment requires delusional self-forgiveness.

[31:15] Shame

  • Why shame is the only documented emotion with zero positive benefit in any published research while every other emotion has at least one.
  • How shame vibrates at 20hz which makes it the lowest frequency a human being can experience.
  • Why anger and fear almost always live on top of shame, which is why men defend fiercely when someone says what you did hurt me rather than responding with curiosity.

Resources:

[33:00] Attachment Theory and the Defectiveness Wound

  • Why attachment theory posits that our earliest caregivers gave us our first map of what intimacy means and what it means to be us.
  • How the dismissive caregiver creates the defectiveness wound.
  • Why “I can’t give my partner what they need” is the defectiveness wound spoken out loud.
  • How the blocks to unconditional love are subconscious programs installed by early caregiving that run the same script in adulthood as if the play were already written.
  • Why the enemy works within our own thoughts and exploits the shame wounds our parents planted.
  • How shame is the primary tool the enemy uses to break people away from love, which is why healing shame is also a deeply spiritual act.
  • Why nobody is defective because a Creator that makes no mistakes made us, and because the capacity to love was present from before the wounding began.

[40:40] Difficult Childhood

  • How Dr. Sarah grew up with a bipolar father whose unpredictability made her hypervigilant and a mother who was physically present but emotionally unavailable.
  • How she entered a marriage seeking someone opposite of her fragile father.
  • Why she stayed for a decade inside a trauma bond built on intermittent reinforcement.
  • How two weeks before the custody trial, her ex-husband died of a combined OxyContin and alcohol overdose.

[46:25] What God Knew

  • Why Dr. Sarah believes God knew her ex-husband was not going to get it together, and that leaving two little girls with an unsafe, drinking driver would have been worse than what happened.
  • How six weeks before he died he flew to Vegas, married someone he barely knew, and changed the life insurance over to her, leaving nothing for the girls.
  • How her mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, her father was wheelchair-bound with dementia, the dismissive avoidant man she was dating pulled away because her pain was too much, and her dog of 16 years died.
  • Why she calls what happened an attachment crisis where every major attachment she had formed was ripped away at once, and her nervous system imploded.
  • How she developed chronic migraine as her nervous system imploded, leaving her barely functional and one ace away from not being here.
  • Why she took a full year of healing, discovered the neuroscience behind emotional processing, applied the tools to her own mind and patterns, and became a completely different person.

[52:30] Authenticity Regulates Your Nervous System

  • How on a coaching call with Mike Zeller, Josh was asked what he really wanted, and the answer was a baseline of authentic joy.
  • Why Josh and his wife got married in Hawaii as the culmination of his evolution as a father and husband.
  • Why the state of authenticity is the single most regulating thing to the human nervous system.
  • How serving others in the middle of suffering helps prevent the suffering from collapsing entirely into victimization.

Resources:

[57:15] How to Know If You Are in Victim Vibration

  • Why constant complaining is the clearest outward signal of a victim identity.
  • Why self-pity is temporarily anesthetic but acts like super glue to the state that is causing the most pain.
  • How Dr. Sarah’s threshold for mind mastery came from Second Corinthians 10:5.
  • Why growing up in a constantly complaining family wired her brain for that programming.

[01:00:15] Unapologetic Faith

  • Why Dr. Sarah is not willing to tiptoe around her faith, because inauthenticity toward what saved her life would cost her the authenticity she spent everything to recover.
  • How God transformed her from a person who wanted to die into someone with a thriving practice, a deep marriage, and a platform of over a million and a half followers.
  • Why the Blue Zones meta-analysis found that the single through line across the five places on earth with the most centenarians was not the food they ate but that they all had a relationship with a higher power.
  • How the second through line in Blue Zones research was that they all felt loved and supported by other people.

Resources:

[01:06:05] Healing Only Happens in Relationship

  • Why wounds that happened in relationship can only be healed in relationship.
  • Why a trigger from a partner is not a problem to manage but a precise signal pointing at something that still needs healing inside the triggered person.
  • How the cherry blossom study showed that emotional imprinting transmits across generations.
  • Why classical conditioning can be undone because it is learned.
  • Anything that was wired together in the brain can be rewired with the right repeated experience.

[01:12:15] B-Grade Parenting and the Four Burners Theory

  • Why there is a maturity involved in being a husband, father, and provider that cannot be experienced outside of a devoted relationship.
  • How you do not have to be a perfect parent to raise a securely attached child.
  • Why a parent running on empty cannot access the same regulation as one who is resourced.
  • How the four burners theory says that work, family, health, and friends cannot all run on full blast simultaneously.
  • Why family must be the burner that stays highest, because what happens in those relationships ripples seven generations forward.

Resources:

[01:19:00] Simple Truths Are Paradoxically Hard to Integrate

  • How people who have had near death experiences report understanding everything at once, but cannot bring the knowledge back into language after returning.
  • Why Dr. Sarah believes we are here specifically to learn limitations.
  • Why losing her ex-husband only makes sense through a God whose character includes reunion.
  • How she started to seek the character of God, not someone else’s description of him, but who he shows up to be for you specifically.
  • Why Dr. Sarah’s daughters kept her alive through the darkest period.

[01:27:00] God Is Always with You

  • Why many people carry wounding around the word God.
  • How Josh’s podcast began 11 years ago on his knees in surrender to God.
  • Why prayer is casting a spell of grace that allows the ego to rest for a moment.
  • How nothing bad or painful that happens on this earth is God’s will.
  • Why staying close to God is the path of least pain, the most support, and the most love.

[01:33:05] You Are an Overcomer

  • Why Dr. Sarah wakes up every day and says out loud: I am an overcomer, God built me to be an overcomer, through God I have strength.
  • How the story you tell yourself about what you are dealing with is the single greatest determinant of whether suffering launches you into post-traumatic growth or keeps you stuck in PTSD.
  • If the internal program runs I cannot give them what they need, the body will not even attempt it.
  • Why replacing “I can’t” with “I am learning” is reprogramming your nervous system.

[01:36:40] The Mess Taught More Than the Doctorate

  • How Dr. Sarah’s New Year’s resolution for this year is to be the happiest person in the room, because she has already seen what dying slowly in a bad mood costs.
  • Why Dr. Sarah’s own mess taught her more than her doctorate ever did.
  • How a leader who shares their own imperfection earns trust that a polished, invulnerable leader cannot.
