Connecting What You Eat With How You Look

Many believe that improving your skin is all about just finding the right skin care products or utilizing cosmetic procedures. While those can be beneficial, it’s critical to go beyond surface-level solutions. Good dietary decisions can support and maintain skin health.

There are several benefits to curating your diet to improve your skin health. For example, choosing certain foods is a natural way to target your complexion from the inside out. Your choices could also benefit other aspects of your well-being in the long run, like improving your cardiovascular system and other bodily functions

A better and balanced diet can also work for people of all ages. Forty-two percent of dermatology patients are in the aging population, and the number is bound to grow as humans continue to live longer. More people who struggle with skin conditions need to realize that it’s not too late to start eating healthy to improve their skin.

Tips on Curating a Skin-Friendly Diet

Improving your diet for better skin involves assessing current habits, cutting back on unhealthy foods, and choosing more nutrient-rich options. Here are some strategies

Avoid Skin-Damaging Food

Some foods can actually damage rather than improve the skin. For example, sugary foods can accelerate skin aging by decreasing skin elasticity. Meanwhile, meats and other foods high in fats can increase risk of cancer when consumed excessively. Processed foods and carbohydrates also share a similar reputation for harming the skin.

Strike a Balance with Fruits and Veggies

You still want to keep meat and carbs in your diet in moderation to keep your body functioning. One way to do so and improve your skin is to incorporate more fruits and veggies into your diet. There are tons of dishes that you can add these into, and some you can simply eat as they are.

Prepare Meals Over Snacks

Intuitive eating — or eating based on your hunger and other needs — can improve your relationship with food. However, for nutrition, it’s important to have a filling breakfast, lunch and dinner to keep you energized throughout the day. Plus, by practicing proper meal preparation, you can scale back on the snacks.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking your water is just as important as choosing the right foods for your diet. Men typically need around 15.5 cups of water, while women need about 11.5 cups. This can change depending on the state of your health, what activities you’re engaging in and much more.

Best Foods for Healthy Skin

Looking for the ideal skin-friendly food to include in your diet? Here are some options to prioritize.

1. Nuts

Nuts are a great food option, whether as a meal ingredient, a salad topping, an extra smoothie ingredient or simply as a snack on their own.  Walnuts are particularly excellent since they can reduce inflammation while improving gut health.

2. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a rich source of beta-carotene. The antioxidants transform into vitamin A, making it one of the best foods for skin repair. You can also count on this to help with UV protection to mitigate skin damage. Incorporate them into your baked-goods recipes, or simply cut them into wedges and roast.

3. Fatty Fish

Fatty fish are known for containing omega-3 fatty acids, which can help prevent water loss and improve the skin barrier. They’re also fantastic at calming redness and skin irritation due to their anti-inflammatory properties. If you tend to have dry or flaky skin, consider including salmon, sardines and other types of fish in your diet.

4. Spinach

Spinach is a staple when it comes to leafy greens, as you can incorporate it in soups, salads, pasta dishes and more. These are rich in Vitamin K, which can help reduce the appearance of dark circles in your undereyes. It can also help detoxify by removing some heavy metals and other toxins from your bloodstream, minimizing blemishes in the long run.

5. Kiwiberries

Berries can do wonders for your health. Kiwiberries, specifically, contain zinc to improve skin health, as well as hair and nail health. Plus, they contain potassium that can enhance the quality of your workout. Compared to regular kiwis, their skin doesn’t have fuzz, which makes them easy to eat without peeling.

Take Care of Your Skin Through Your Food Intake

Your diet can have more influence on your skin than you’d think, which is why you need to be intentional about what you eat. The cleaner your diet, the healthier your complexion could become in the long run. Make the right decisions and watch your skin clear up and glow.
