Summer is not something you scroll past. It is something you live.
Every July I notice the same thing. The days stretch out, the sun hangs around past dinner, my kids are outside barefoot, and my thumb still wants to check the phone. A summer digital detox sounds dreamy on paper. In real life, the phone comes to the pool, the beach, the campfire, and the fireworks. This year I tried something different. I let a little gray square called Brick hold the line for me.
Why Summer Is the Best Season for a Digital Detox
Summer is the season your biology was built for. Long light. Warm air. Slow evenings. Movement that feels like play instead of a workout. It is the one time of year when life itself is more interesting than the feed.
And yet most of us spend it half here. We film the sunset instead of watching it. We answer a work email at the lake. We are physically on vacation and neurologically still at the office.
That split attention has a cost. Your neural system cannot fully downshift into rest while a device keeps pinging it with tiny emergencies. Real rest needs real separation.
What the Brick Device Actually Does
If you missed my first write up, Brick is the pause button for real life. It is a small physical device paired with an app. You choose the apps you want blocked, tap your phone to the Brick, and those apps go dark. To get them back, you physically tap the Brick again.
That is the whole trick. The key to your distraction no longer lives inside the distraction. It lives on the kitchen counter, in the glovebox, or back at the rental house while you are down at the water.
It works on iPhone and Android, there is no battery to charge, and you still keep the essentials you choose, like maps, calls, texts, and your camera.
My Summer Digital Detox Playbook with Brick
Here is my simple summer rhythm. Steal it.
- Morning light first. Brick on before I walk outside. Sunlight and breath before any inbox.
- Family hours. From pool time to dinner, social and email stay bricked. My kids get the real version of me.
- Adventure mode. Hiking, paddling, road trips. Maps and camera stay on, everything else stays off.
- Sunset to bed. The Brick stays in another room after dinner. If I want to scroll, I have to stand up and walk over. Most nights, I do not.
That walk across the room is where your power comes back. It turns a reflex into a choice.
The Freedom on the Other Side
When I quit social media for 30 days with Brick, my mind got quieter within a couple of days. Summer amplifies that. Without the constant pull, you start noticing things again: the sound of the cicadas, the way your kid laughs underwater, how good a slow dinner tastes when nobody is checking a score.
This is what we talk about all the time on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast. Liberation is not something you think your way into. It is something you practice in the body, one present moment at a time. Brick is not the practice. It is the guardrail that makes the practice possible.
It touches every side of the Wellness Pentagon™ too. Physical, because you move more and sleep better. Mental, because your attention stops getting shredded. Emotional, because you feel your feelings instead of numbing them. Spiritual, because stillness opens your connection to Creator and God. Financial, because a rested mind makes clearer decisions.
Make This Your Summer of Presence
