Why Men Unconsciously Reject Love: The Hidden Wound Disguised as Avoidance

PODCAST INTRO

What if the man who pulls away from the love he wants isn’t rejecting you, but protecting a scared little boy inside him??
Josh Trent welcomes Ryan Moresby White, founder of Heal The Boy, to the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 835, to explore why every man carries a wounded boy into his relationships, how the grief he never let himself feel turns into shutting down, avoiding intimacy, and self-sabotage, and why a man becomes truly safe to love only when he heals the boy within.

In This Episode, Ryan Moresby-White Uncovers:

[01:20] Women as God’s Mirror for Men’s Unresolved Pain

  • How women can smell the unresolved grief a man carries into relationship before he even knows it is there.
  • When two people meet in relationship, two entire family systems are actually coming together behind them.
  • Why the original grief from childhood does not know the difference between then and now.
  • How we have become a grief-phobic society that will do everything to avoid going into the original pain.
  • Why the greatest fear of grief is not the grief itself but the terrified child within who believes he will die if he feels it.
  • How the absence of rites of passage has left men with no container to move from boyhood into manhood.

Resources:

[06:15] The Original Wound and the Empty Mirror

  • How a child experiences the entire world through the nervous system of their mother and their father.
  • What it does to a child when they look into the nervous system of an emotionally unavailable parent and find nothing reflected back.
  • Why the loneliest thing a human being can experience is to look into a parent and have their fullness go unacknowledged.
  • How a child must abandon and neglect parts of themselves just to survive inside a family system that cannot hold all of them.

[10:50] The Rose That Gets Trampled

  • How between zero and seven years old the young psyche is open and growing like a rose, and the parent’s nervous system is what it grows toward.
  • Why when the parent cannot reflect safety the rose gets trampled, and the way it grows afterward carries a distortion.
  • How the story of being broken or unworthy is not just a thought but a meaning made before words even existed.
  • Why identity then spends an entire lifetime gathering evidence to confirm whatever it decided about itself at the deepest level.
  • Why nothing changes until the original loss has been grieved and the nervous system of the little child within has been held and truly acknowledged.

[15:10] Why Men Paradoxically Reject the Love They Desire

  • How childhood conditioning creates a cracked lens that a man carries unconsciously into every relationship.
  • Why true love awakens the exact unresolved wounds that existed around love in the original family.
  • How the mother wound manifests in two ways, either as insufficient oxygen from emotional absence, or as smothering oxygen from an anxious caregiver who never let the child form his own self.
  • Why when a man constantly seeks multiple women or craves endless validation, the child in him is simply trying to breathe again.
  • How avoidance of intimacy is not a rejection of the present partner but a protection against repeating the original hurt from caregivers.

[19:50] That Is How We Change the World

  • How the red pill and blue pill movements exist to monetize the wound inside men rather than heal it.
  • Why Ryan’s mission is for men to come back home to themselves and heal the boy so they can be the grounded safe presence a woman needs to do her own healing.
  • How a healed father and a supported mother in a connected family is how the world actually changes.
  • Why men are bringing their entire childhood into every relationship because there is no longer a sacred space for them to grieve it and leave it behind.
  • What a man in his 40s or 50s who has never had a rite of passage needs to know first: there is a wounded boy within every single man without exception.

Resources:

[25:05] I’ll Never Be Like My Father Is a Prayer

  • Why saying “I’ll never be like my father” is actually a spell, a prayer, and a signal to the universe of exactly what will be created.
  • What lives beneath the resistance in that phrase is resentment, unprocessed hurt, rage, and grief that has never been acknowledged.
  • How the suppressed rage from that grief can drive a man to build enormous success, and then a child arrives and becomes the exact mirror for what he was running from.
  • How Ryan’s father grew up in Africa not knowing his own father until age fifteen, was denied even a bicycle, and then worked seven days a week to give his son every material thing he had dreamed of.
  • How Ryan had every material thing his father had wished for as a child, yet still did not feel like he had a father.
  • Why childhood is not what it looked like. It is what it felt like.

[29:25] The Generational Library We Carry

  • How every person is a library carrying the unresolved pages of every generation that came before them.
  • Why beginning grief work with the intention of healing generationally can actually be another way of avoiding the child within who is quietly asking for attention.
  • How the more Ryan met his own little boy, the more the grief around his father began to unlock, and the generational thread opened from there organically.
  • Why the ego is extraordinarily clever at finding spiritual-sounding reasons to avoid the original pain directly.

[32:55] Spread Activation Theory and Where It Lives in the Body

  • How spread activation theory explains why a single rejection today does not only bring up today’s pain but every unprocessed moment of rejection from an entire lifetime all at once.
  • How the psyche fragments when a wound occurs and each part builds a neural network of protective strategies designed to prevent that pain from ever happening again.
  • Why the body cannot tell the difference between the original wound and a trigger happening right now.
  • How for Ryan the fragmented part of him that holds the little boy shows up as tightness and contraction across the neck, traps, and shoulders, as though he is carrying the weight of the world.
  • What happens when he slows down and brings attention to that tension is that emotional memories begin flooding through and the original pain finally surfaces.

[36:35] Breathwork and the Little Boy’s Language

  • How breathwork was the single greatest tool for slowing the analytical mind down to the speed at which the subconscious is actually operating.
  • Why you must slow down completely because you cannot slip beneath the surface while water skiing across it.
  • Why breathwork switches off the prefrontal cortex and creates the conditions for emotional memory to finally speak.
  • How the muscular tension held in the body is not just physical but armoring around an emotion that is trying to communicate through felt sense.
  • Why the little boy communicates through anxiety, depression, fear, and loneliness, and all of those signals are simply the child asking for the adult’s attention.

[41:10] The Man Who Had Done All the Inner Work

  • How Ryan had spent years reading books, attending events, doing men’s work, and building mental understanding of his triggers, and yet the moment his partner brought something to him, all of it dissolved.
  • Why knowing everything and still shutting down created a second layer of shame on top of the original wound.
  • How he white-knuckled that relationship entirely from fear of her leaving, operating from the consciousness of a scared little boy rather than a man.
  • How his nervous system went into a tremor and convulsion response for four or five hours on the bathroom floor after she left him.
  • Why he could not tell the difference between the adult man on that floor and the seven-year-old boy who had been alone when his parents divorced with no one to hold his nervous system while he collapsed.

[47:30] Racing Dirt Bikes and Not Feeling Like He Had a Father

  • How Ryan knows with every part of himself that everything in his life has led directly to this work.
  • How from the youngest age he would go to work with his father during school holidays not just to spend time with him but to make sure his father was happy.
  • Why he became his father’s emotional support system before he even had words for what that was.
  • How through going into the grief the work shifted from coming out of wounding to coming from a deeper place of truth and meaning.
  • How the hot air bubble Josh felt in his belly for years only finally dissolved when he went to young Josh.

[50:50] The Story Beneath the Pattern

  • What Ryan said when he hit the bathroom floor was asking God what the hell to do now.
  • What the story had been running beneath every relationship was that it is only a matter of time before the people he loves most leave him.
  • How that story made him unconsciously attracted to women who were emotionally unavailable because unavailability felt like home to his nervous system.
  • How after the breakup he committed to 12 months with no dating and a full leaning into brotherhood, grief work, mission, and writing.
  • How God placed that same woman back in front of him a year later and he was standing before her as a man who had his little boy rather than as the boy himself.
  • Why the healing came through saying no to someone he loved more than anything.

[01:00:00] How He Knew in His Body She Wasn’t for Him

  • How having his little boy meant he could finally see her little girl clearly without projection distorting the view.
  • How he could see she was operating from a hurt little girl who had experienced deep sexual abuse and was looking to him to save her.
  • Why the simple act of entering a relationship triggers the original emotional state of relationship, meaning he was no longer a man but the unresolved younger parts of him in relationship.
  • How once he had himself he could love her fully and also clearly acknowledge that she was not seeing him through the eyes of the woman.
  • Why the most painful act of healing was saying no to someone he loved more than anything from a place of finally honoring where she actually was.

[01:04:20] Love All Parts and Still Hold Standards

  • Why the cadence of healing is not always equal between two people and sometimes two people meet in different seasons but on the same trail.
  • How loving all of someone means loving the pre-verbal child, the five-year-old, the teenager, and the adult all at once without rejecting any of them.
  • Why holding on to the fantasy of who someone could be is not actually loving who they are.
  • How all of that full acceptance can still exist alongside standards, because standards are the hygiene of a relationship and not a rejection of the person.
  • What the key question becomes when a relationship is uncertain is whether you can love all the parts of them and also acknowledge where they are not aligned with your own being and values.

[01:09:20] The Notebook, Hollywood, and the Wound Being Monetized

  • Why the most damaging thing about movies like The Notebook is that they build an entire romantic narrative on need rather than on genuine choice.
  • How media has been deliberately built to monetize the wound inside men and women by presenting need-based love as the highest form of devotion.
  • How the phrase “if he can’t handle me at my worst he doesn’t deserve me at my best” is built to protect a wound rather than invite growth.
  • What the only real test of whether someone online is worth following is whether they live and breathe what they teach behind closed doors.
  • How Ryan wakes up every single day questioning whether he is the living embodiment of everything he teaches.
  • Why how someone makes you feel after being with them is the real discernment tool, whether you leave feeling nourished or taxed and guarded.
  • How brotherhood functions as a second nervous system that holds a man in everything he is doing in the world.

Resources:

[01:16:10] Embodiment Is the Only Test That Matters

  • How the ego is a subtle foe that can make someone appear completely aligned while their personal life is quietly saying something entirely different.
  • Why the willingness to have humility about the moments of disembodiment is what actually builds trust over time.
  • What makes a man emotionally safe is not that he gets it right all the time but that he is willing to face himself every single day.
  • How Ryan anticipates fatherhood with something close to tears because every single man is already a father to the little boy within him.
  • What happens when a man becomes a father to his little boy is that the father he becomes to his actual children is the present, grounded, secure man those children have been waiting for.

[01:19:20] Every Man Also Needs to Feel Safe

  • How the phrase “that’s just who I am,” spoken with the chin raised, reveals the wound hiding behind the words.
  • Why Ryan holds great compassion for women who have grown up in a world full of grown adult children in adult male bodies.
  • How a man’s responsibility is to heal the boy within him and to be a safe space for a woman to heal her own little girl.
  • Why being a safe space for her to heal is not the same as being responsible for her healing because she must be willing to meet her younger parts herself.
  • How a safe man who has done the deep work still cannot make a woman feel safe if she is not yet willing to see him through the eyes of the woman.

[01:22:00] The Man on the Couch

  • Why a man also needs to feel safe in relationship and a free pass for verbal or emotional abuse is not a standard that any healthy dynamic can sustain.
  • What makes a safe man different from a nice man is that he does not always make you feel comfortable, but he is a loving and honest presence.
  • How in a relationship there will never always be an equal exchange of energy, and the key is how much a man can fill his own cup when she has nothing left to give.
  • Why most men are completely under-resourced emotionally because they place the full weight of their emotional needs on the relationship rather than on brotherhood, mission, and community.
  • How when a man has himself he does not need anything from her, which paradoxically makes him the most attractive version of himself she has ever experienced.

[01:30:30] It Happens Only in Community

  • How when a woman feels that a man does not need anything from her she is drawn toward him in a way that nothing else produces.
  • Why the real transformation did not happen for Josh through podcasting or reading but through showing up in community with other men and allowing himself to be seen and held.
  • Why a true initiation is something you do not want, and every hero in the journey refuses the call repeatedly until he is standing at the edge of the cliff.
  • How there is a primordial beating energy of its own when men gather together in an intentional ceremonial circle.
  • Why brotherhood is a second nervous system that supports a man in his work, his relationship, his mission, and his children all at once.
  • How the circle in a retreat becomes the containment the little boy needed as a child, held by many nervous systems at once, able to grieve in the way that is impossible to do alone in a bedroom.

[01:37:25] Build the Ship Before Sailing the Waters of Soul

  • Why jumping straight into deep grief work without first stabilizing the nervous system and building education is the same as descending to one hundred meters on a first scuba dive with no training.
  • How the first stage of healing is learning the equipment, stabilizing yourself, and understanding what is actually happening inside the body before going anywhere near the deeper waters.
  • What titration looks like is small descents into the grief, coming back to the surface, and going a little further each time as capacity grows.
  • Why the ship has to be built before sailing the waters of soul because one storm before the vessel is ready will leave a person dissociated, retraumatized, and mistaking that for healing.
  • How many modalities are sending people directly into the deep water without ever teaching them how to float first.

[01:40:30] Rite of Passage

  • Why after the breakup Ryan found a home in the forest in Australia, and lived there with his friend for seven months, holding each other through their separate unravelings.
  • How Ryan first learned what brotherhood actually was by asking a man if they could have some time together and then simply collapsing and being held while his nervous system did what it needed to do.
  • What the five day rite of passage retreat is built on is the same foundation of brother support that Ryan and his inner circle first created for each other before ever offering it to anyone else.
  • How the oldest man to go through the retreat was eighty years old, and the lesson for every younger man in the room was that it is never too late and there is never a better time to begin than now.
