“A rut is not a dead end. It is a signal that your soul is ready for something new. The way out is not a giant leap. It is one small, fresh step taken today.”
Josh Trent

Learning how to get out of a rut is one of the most freeing things you can do, because feeling stuck can quietly drain the color out of life. Maybe every day feels the same. Maybe you are going through the motions at work, in your relationships, or in your health, wondering where the spark went. Maybe you know you want something to change but cannot quite name what. Ruts are incredibly common, and they happen to everyone at some point. They are not a sign that something is wrong with you. They are often a sign that you have outgrown an old rhythm and are ready for a new one. That inside out shift from stuck to alive is the heart of the L.I.F.E. Method™.

Here is the joy forward truth at the center of it all. You do not need to overhaul your entire life to feel alive again. Momentum is built through small, fresh actions that add novelty, meaning, and progress to your days. When you approach stuckness this way, you discover that the path forward is often much closer and simpler than it felt from inside the stuckness. Let us explore exactly how.

What a Rut Really Is

A rut is a period of feeling stuck, flat, or uninspired, where your days follow the same pattern and life feels like it has lost its spark. It is the sense of going through the motions without growth, excitement, or meaning. You might still be functioning, even succeeding on the outside, but something inside feels stagnant.

Ruts can show up in any area of life. A career rut feels like doing the same work without growth or passion. A relationship rut feels like living parallel lives with your partner. A fitness rut feels like doing the same workout with no progress, or not moving at all. A creative rut feels like having nothing new to say. And a life rut can feel like all of these at once, a general sense of monotony and disconnection.

It helps to understand that a rut is often a transition point. The habits and routines that once served you may no longer fit who you are becoming. The discomfort of a rut is a nudge toward growth. When you listen to it with curiosity rather than judgment, it can become the beginning of a beautiful new chapter. These moments of transition and renewal are a theme we explore often on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast.

Why We Get Stuck

We get stuck because routines that once felt fresh become automatic, our lives lose novelty and challenge, and stress or fatigue makes change feel too hard to attempt. Over time, comfort can slowly turn into stagnation without us noticing.

Routines are wonderful for efficiency, but too much sameness can dull our sense of aliveness. When every day follows the same script, the brain has less new information to process and fewer moments of discovery. Life starts to blur together. Many people describe feeling like weeks pass without anything memorable happening, which is a classic sign of a rut.

Fear and fatigue also keep us stuck. Change can feel risky, and when we are already tired or stressed, the effort of trying something new can feel overwhelming. So we stay with what is familiar, even when it no longer feels good. Sometimes old beliefs play a role too, quiet voices saying “this is just how life is” or “people like me do not get to change.” These beliefs can be gently questioned and released, which is explored in inherited limiting beliefs. If fear of failure is part of what keeps you stuck, the practices in how to stop fearing failure can help.

The Gift of Fresh Momentum

Fresh momentum gives you renewed energy, a sense of possibility, deeper engagement with your life, and the joy of growing again. When you break out of a rut, life starts to feel colorful and meaningful once more.

Think about the last time you tried something new and loved it. Maybe you visited a new place, learned a new skill, or met someone inspiring. Remember the spark you felt? That sense of aliveness is what momentum feels like. It spills over into every part of life, lifting your mood, sharpening your curiosity, and making ordinary days feel more vibrant.

Momentum also builds on itself. One small change leads to another. A new morning walk might lead to a new friendship, which might lead to a new hobby, which might open a new career path. You do not have to plan the whole journey. You just have to take the first step. And here is the part I love most. Getting out of a rut often reconnects you with who you truly are. As you try new things and notice what lights you up, you rediscover passions and parts of yourself that had been sleeping. That rediscovery is beautifully explored in how to discover who you really are.

The Science of Getting Unstuck

The science of getting unstuck shows that more variety in daily experiences is linked with greater positive emotion, that scheduling meaningful and rewarding activities lifts mood, that tracking progress helps people reach their goals, and that a sense of autonomy, growth, and connection fuels lasting motivation. Momentum can be built deliberately.

Start with variety. In a study published in Nature Neuroscience, Aaron Heller and colleagues tracked people's daily movements using GPS over several months. On days when people visited more varied places and had more diverse experiences, they reported feeling more positive emotion. These effects were linked to connectivity between brain regions involved in processing novelty and reward. New experiences appear to genuinely lift our mood, which means even small doses of novelty can make a meaningful difference in how your days feel.

Next, consider action. Behavioral activation is an approach that helps people feel better by deliberately scheduling activities that are meaningful, enjoyable, or aligned with their values. A meta analysis by David Ekers and colleagues in PLoS One found that behavioral activation was an effective approach for low mood and depression. The core insight applies to ruts too: action often comes before motivation, and doing meaningful things helps you feel better, not the other way around.

Progress and purpose matter as well. A meta analysis led by Benjamin Harkin in Psychological Bulletin found that monitoring progress toward goals reliably helped people achieve them. And in an influential paper in American Psychologist, Richard Ryan and Edward Deci described how people thrive when they feel autonomy, competence, and connection. When your days include choice, growth, and meaningful relationships, motivation tends to return naturally.

How to Get Out of a Rut

You learn how to get out of a rut by doing one small new thing, adding variety to your days, scheduling meaningful activities, tracking small progress, and reconnecting with your deeper why. These five steps help you rebuild momentum without needing a dramatic life overhaul. Here is how I practice and teach them.

1. Do One Small New Thing

Choose one small action you have never done before or have not done in a long time. Take a different route to work. Try a new recipe. Visit a new park. Listen to a different kind of music. Strike up a conversation with someone new. Small novelty wakes up your brain and reminds you that change is possible. You do not need a grand plan. You just need a spark.

2. Add Variety to Your Days

Look at your weekly routine and find places to add variety. Work from a different location one day a week. Explore a new neighborhood on the weekend. Switch up your workout. Try a new class or hobby. As the research shows, more diverse daily experiences are linked with more positive emotion. Variety is not frivolous. It is fuel for feeling alive, and it is one of the simplest ways to remind yourself that life is still full of surprises.

3. Schedule Meaningful Activities

Do not wait until you feel motivated. Put activities that matter to you on your calendar, like time with a friend, a creative project, volunteering, or a walk in nature. Treat them as important appointments. Doing meaningful things, even when you do not feel like it, often brings the motivation and joy back. This connects beautifully with the approach in how to find motivation.

4. Track Small Progress

Choose one area where you want to grow and track your progress, no matter how small. A journal, a habit tracker, or a simple calendar works well. Seeing evidence of movement, even tiny steps, builds a sense of competence and momentum. It reminds you that you are not stuck anymore. You are moving.

5. Reconnect With Your Why

Ask yourself what truly matters to you right now. What would make this season of life feel meaningful? What did you used to love that you have drifted away from? Your answers point toward the direction of your next chapter. If you are unsure, the practices in how to reconnect with your purpose can help you find clarity.

It also helps to borrow inspiration from other people. Spend time with friends who are growing, curious, and trying new things. Read books, listen to conversations, or attend events that expose you to fresh ideas and possibilities. Seeing others take small brave steps makes your own next step feel more achievable. Sometimes a single conversation with someone who sees your potential can be the spark that breaks a long rut. If connection itself feels thin right now, the practices in how to make friends as an adult can open new doors.

Start with just one of these steps this week. One small spark can be enough to begin shifting your whole season. And if you would love to grow alongside a supportive community, the Liberated Life Tribe is a warm place to begin.

Small Steps Versus Giant Leaps

Small steps are usually far more effective than giant leaps when you are trying to get unstuck. When we feel stuck, we often imagine that the only way out is a dramatic change, like quitting a job, moving across the country, or completely reinventing ourselves. Sometimes big changes are right. But often, the pressure to make a giant leap keeps us frozen.

Giant leaps can feel overwhelming, risky, and hard to start. When the only options seem to be “stay exactly the same” or “change everything,” staying the same often wins by default. The size of the change becomes its own obstacle. And even when people do make a big leap, they sometimes find that the old patterns follow them, because the inner shift has not yet happened.

Small steps work differently. They are easy to start, low risk, and build confidence with each success. A new morning walk, a weekly class, a conversation with a mentor, an hour each week on a passion project. These small moves gently shift your energy and open new doors. Over time, they can add up to profound change, sometimes even the big change you once thought you needed, but approached from a place of strength rather than desperation. Building change this way is the heart of how to build healthy habits.

How to Get Out of a Rut With the L.I.F.E. Method™

The L.I.F.E. Method™ offers a complete framework for getting unstuck through four pillars: Liberation, Integration, Frequency, and Embodiment. Each pillar addresses a different layer of stuckness, and together they help you move from stagnation into a life that feels truly your own.

Liberation means freeing yourself from the stories, expectations, and fears that keep you stuck. Notice the beliefs that say change is impossible or not meant for you. Gently question them and release what no longer fits. Liberation creates space for something new to grow.

Integration means weaving new actions into your daily life in small, sustainable ways. Rather than trying to change everything at once, you add fresh habits and experiences into your existing rhythm until they become part of who you are.

Frequency is about the energy you bring to your life. Ruts often come with a low, flat emotional tone. Intentionally cultivating curiosity, gratitude, playfulness, and joy raises your frequency and makes it easier to take inspired action.

Embodiment means living your new direction through your body and actions, not just your thoughts. Every time you try something new, you feel your identity shifting a little more toward the person you are becoming. This bridge between knowing and doing is explored beautifully in embodiment, the missing piece between knowing and doing.

Celebrating Every Spark

Celebrating every spark of change helps build the momentum that carries you out of a rut. Your brain learns through reward, so when you notice and appreciate the new things you try and the progress you make, you strengthen your motivation to keep going.

Pay attention to the small moments of aliveness. The excitement of trying a new restaurant. The satisfaction of finishing a creative project. The joy of a new friendship. The pride of sticking with a new habit for a week. These moments deserve recognition. Write them down, share them with someone you love, or simply pause and savor them.

Celebration also shifts your focus from what feels stuck to what is moving. When you look back on a week and see several new experiences and small wins, it becomes clear that you are no longer in the same place. That awareness builds hope and energy for the next step. There is a whole practice around noticing these moments in celebrating small wins.

Growth Is a Lifelong Practice

Growth is a lifelong practice, and ruts are a natural part of it. You will likely experience periods of stuckness again in the future, and that is okay. Each rut is an invitation to reflect, refresh, and step into a new chapter. The skills you build now will help you move through future ruts more quickly and with more grace.

Rest can be part of getting unstuck too. Sometimes a rut is really a sign of exhaustion. When you are depleted, nothing feels exciting, and change feels impossible. In those seasons, the most powerful step may be to rest deeply for a while, sleep more, and lower the pressure on yourself. Once your energy returns, curiosity and motivation often return with it.

Many people find it helpful to build regular renewal into their lives so ruts are less likely to take hold. Seasonal reflections, yearly adventures, ongoing learning, and regular time with inspiring people all keep life fresh. Some people set a simple intention to try one new thing each month, which keeps curiosity alive and prevents stagnation from settling in.

This is also where the Wellness Pentagon™ becomes helpful. Ruts often show up first in one dimension of life but affect all of them. Caring for your physical health, mental stimulation, emotional connection, financial clarity, and spiritual life, including your Connection to Creator and God, creates a foundation of vitality that makes stuckness less likely and easier to break through. You will find many guests sharing how they broke out of their own ruts across our latest episodes.

When Stuck Feels Heavy

If feeling stuck feels heavy right now, you are in very good company, and it is completely understandable. Getting unstuck does not mean you will suddenly feel inspired and energized. It means you will gently rebuild momentum, a little at a time, at a pace that honors where you are.

When stuckness feels overwhelming, start with the smallest possible step. Take a walk somewhere new. Call an old friend. Rearrange one room in your home. Listen to a podcast on a topic you know nothing about. These tiny shifts can create surprising openings. Caring for your energy through sleep, movement, and fresh air also makes change feel more possible, which is explored in how to sleep better. Supportive tools like a journal for reflection or a breath training device can help, and you can find a few we trust in our wellness tools store.

It is also important to know that a long lasting sense of being stuck, especially when it comes with persistent sadness, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, hopelessness, or changes in sleep and appetite, may be a sign of depression that deserves professional care. A qualified therapist or health professional can offer compassionate, effective support. There is real strength in asking for help. Wherever you are, be patient and kind with yourself, and trust that learning how to get out of a rut is something you can absolutely grow, one fresh step at a time. Gentle breath practices with BREATHE™ can also help you feel more present and alive as you begin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I am in a rut?

Common signs include feeling like every day is the same, going through the motions without excitement, losing interest in goals, feeling bored or restless, and noticing that weeks pass without anything memorable happening. A rut often feels like stagnation rather than intense distress.

What is the fastest way to get out of a rut?

Do one small new thing today, like taking a different route, trying a new activity, or reaching out to someone you have not spoken to in a while. Novelty and action create momentum. Research shows more varied daily experiences are linked with more positive emotion.

Why do I feel stuck even when life is going well?

You can be successful on the outside and still feel stagnant inside if your days lack novelty, growth, or meaning. Often this signals that you have outgrown old routines and are ready for a new challenge or direction that better reflects who you are becoming.

Do I need to make a big change to get unstuck?

Usually not. Small, consistent changes are often more effective than dramatic leaps. Adding variety, scheduling meaningful activities, and tracking small progress can gradually shift your energy and open doors to bigger changes if and when they are right for you.

How can I find motivation when I feel stuck?

Do not wait for motivation to arrive. Schedule meaningful activities and take small actions anyway. Research on behavioral activation shows that doing rewarding things often comes before feeling motivated, and the feeling tends to follow the action.

When is feeling stuck a sign of something more serious?

If feeling stuck lasts a long time and comes with persistent sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest, or changes in sleep and appetite, it may be a sign of depression. Reach out to a qualified therapist or health professional for support.
